Livin’ Good Currency

As evidenced in their own lives; inspiring and motivating news is usually bad news turned good. The hurdles, obstacles and setbacks that people have faced but used to fuel their passions and purpose are often where you find the gems. Welcome to Livin’ Good Currency where our hosts Tony and Tobias converse with some of the most inspiring and insightful people in the world on how they discovered their purpose, pursued their passions and overcame a myriad of obstacles. Our hosts are living examples of this. Tobias Tubbs who was given a double life sentence without the possibility of parole for a crime he didn’t commit, intentionally chose to serve those 28 years as an opportunity to be a light where darkness otherwise prevailed. He became an expert in mindfulness, conflict resolution, art/gardening, spirituality, philosophy, and natural healing arts to positively impact the lives of thousands of young men and women. Tony Samadani seemingly came from the other side of that coin as an entertainment lawyer. When he was struck with a debilitating disease and health scare, Tony needed to discover a path back to health. This process allowed him to go on to inspire many lives in rediscovering their own health and living a life of purpose. One fateful day brought these two worlds together. New episodes every Monday. Listen anywhere you get your podcasts. Subscribe, rate, and review if you enjoy it. Livin’ Good Currency is more than a podcast name, it’s a philosophy our hosts are living by and in each day: “Do Good, Earn Good.”

The Lesson:  Sheetal Sheth grew up in the middle of a 1st generation immigrant story, but as the years went by, and Indian culture became more acceptable in America, she realized it hadn't existed beyond traditional culture, food, festivals, religion; it wasn't just normal. Sheetal is of the opinion that it's seeing Indian or any kind of brown person, in all aspects of life that breaks down stigmatization and othering in society and makes everyone better for it.
Notable Excerpt: "I've never been attracted to the bright shiny things. I love people, I love connecting, there's nothing I love more than meeting someone new and getting inside their brain. I'm obsessed with psychology, people, why they do things, so that's why I (started acting). To me it's about connecting and being able to share stories, because I really do believe that when you meet someone, whether it's in person or on your television, or through a song or a book, is when you can change minds or hearts."
The Guest: Sheetal is an acclaimed actress, accomplished author, producer, and activist. Sheetal’s breakout role came in Albert Brooks’ “Looking for Comedy in the Muslim World” and she is known for her performances in a wide range of memorable roles in film and on television. As an author, she's written Always Anjali, and Bravo Anjali, a pair of children's books featuring a South Asian protagonist.
Sheetal is also a cancer survivor and outspoken advocate who served in President Clinton's AmeriCorps and is currently on the advisory board of Equality Now

The Lesson: In many circumstances, the U.S. government, and those governing the 50 states, will place extraordinary, ruinous sentences on men and women who are simply in a difficult period of their lives socially, or who happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Well these loaded convictions are not always the end of the story, as there are many people and organizations around the country, whose effort often goes unreported, working to set innocent and wrongfully convicted people free.
Notable Excerpt: "It was Winston Churchill who said 'we make a living by what we get we make a life by what we give,' and it's also true [that] at the end of the day I've been very fortunate in the music industry. I've discovered a lot of great artists, helped to launch their careers—but nobody really cares, it doesn't matter. Nobody really cares next week. Nobody cares who discovered the Beatles! Who discovered the Beatles, do you guys even know? I don't know, it doesn't even matter! The Beatles matter, they'll always matter. But what does matter is that I've helped so many people get out of prison, start their lives again, help put their families back together, that actually does matter."
The Guest: Jason Flom was described by the New Yorker as one of the most successful record-men of the last 20 years, and serves as CEO of Lava Media. He held previous positions as chairman of Atlantic Records, Virgin Records, and Capitol Music Group, and played a major part in the breakouts of artists like Katy Perry, Lorde, Gretta Van Fleet, and Kid Rock. His other life is in criminal justice reform, and hosts the hit podcast, Wrongful Conviction, which features interviews with men and women who have spent decades in prison for crimes they did not commit, some even sentenced to death. Flom also hosts Righteous Convictions, which spotlights social justice leaders working for change in criminal justice. His work has led to dozens of first-time, non-violent, or innocent convicts regain their freedom.

The Lesson: The stereotype of the Hollywood producer is one of self-involvement, packed schedules, and rudeness. By definition however, producers know how to make things happen, and in the case of Peter Samuelson, that's involved 25 films, creating and raising over a billion dollars for 5 separate charities that work in children's hospitals and foster care organizations providing psycho-neuro-immunology, dream-making, and improving education outcomes.
Notable Excerpt: "He (Steven Spielberg) said, 'well if we're going to raise money, maybe I should give some money,' and I said, 'I think that'd be very good, you're the chairman so I think that'd be excellent thank you for suggesting that.' He said, 'what do you think I should give?' I said 'I have no idea. Furthermore if I had an idea, there's no way that I'm telling Steven Spielberg what he should give to charity.' He said 'You can't leave until you give me a number,' so it was like a face off."
The Guest: Holding an MA from Cambridge, Peter Samuelson is a prolific Hollywood Film Producer, Educator, Media Executive and Serial Social Impact Entrepreneur having created 5 major charities -  Starlight, Starbright World, First Star, AspireLabs, and Edar.
In addition to producing 25 films, Peter continues to dedicate every day to fight for those less fortunate than others, specifically America's abused and neglected children.

The Lesson: No demographic factor can get in the way of a life improved by doing good for yourself and others, and host Tony's friend Emmanuel Kelly is a perfect example of that. As an orphan abandoned in a cardboard box on an Iraq battlefield, half dead, damaged physically by chemical weapons, and with no identification of any kind, it's a miracle that this enigma child bizarrely of Ugandan/Korean ancestry should be alive today.
Notable Excerpt: "As a human I've made a lot of mistakes and there'll be a lot of mistakes I'll have to rectify in the next years and forever in my life, but only probably in the last year, I've been able to really define the person I want to be and the person that I can become, and to find my purpose in my own life. Now others define me as the way I want to define myself."
The Guest: Artist and singer Emmanuel Kelly was a teenage contestant on Season 3 of the X Factor Australia. 10 years he has toured with Coldplay as a special guest, opened for Snoop Dogg, performed with David Foster, and legendary DJ Paul Oakenfold. Under the tutelage and label of Coldplay's Chris Martin, his first album will be released later this year. Along with his musical pursuits he is the founder of The Outlier Group, which aims to enable the world differently.

The Lesson: The beliefs we reserve for ourselves and about our spirit can be particularly damaging. Without knowing who we are, it's nearly impossible to know what we want or what we need. Furthermore, without truly knowing oneself, it's almost impossible to truly know someone else or to give or not give the credit they deserve or don't. Recognizing that humanness unlocks a true appreciation for ourselves, for others, and forgiveness for the two.
Notable Excerpt: "We talk about how how people should be more open-minded and listen to each other, and I'm curious what about ourselves, what about our own beliefs? Why do we immediately believe that we're not worth it, why do we immediately believe we're not good enough? When I can see me, I see you: so until I can fully see me, I can't see the gift and the beauty in you, I can't see the struggle, the humanness in you. As soon as I realized I was this small and fragile human, then I was able to give you the same gift."
The Guest: Shari Alyse has been called America's "Joy Magnet," and is a TV personality, TedX Inspirational Keynote Speaker, and best-selling author

The Lesson: Investing in people is investing in the future. Putting money behind women-led companies can lead to great financial returns, and even better social ones. Better still, investing in early-stage companies led by minorities or women builds a power base where before there wasn't one.
Notable Excerpt: "I'm really proud also, [that] we picked our bucket and we said women. And because we said women, instead of this traditional Silicon Valley road where these kids come from Harvard or Stanford, we started getting companies from all across the country, all different backgrounds. We have 50% minority-led companies, and we look at age, race, and gender in terms of every founding team, and when you invest in those early stages, that's when you can make the change."
The Guest: Jesse Draper is a mother of three and General Partner of Halogen Ventures, a financial management company that allows investors to grow their financial, cultural, and spiritual capital by backing funds which diversify along lines of gender, race, and age. Their portfolio consists of 70 companies with an emphasis on female leadership and consumer technologies, and have seen strong returns over short periods.

The Lesson: How can we ensure that we get the most out of education? What will be the future of primary healthcare? What is the most logical way of looking at failure, disappointment, or disaster? How can we reverse our biological age? Serial entrepreneur Naveen Jain gives his perspective on how to plan and execute a more harmonious future.
Notable Excerpt: "We are thinking backward as we're educating our children. This idea that you develop one skill and you stay in your lane has to go away, because the whole education system was designed for the industrial era, where you learned to do machining and could work for the rest of your life. As we are living in this society today where the technologies are becoming obsolete by the time you even graduate, you have to learn to learn, you have to create children that are constantly learning."
The Guest: Naveen Jain became an entrepreneur and philanthropist after leaving the higher echelons of Microsoft. He founded InfoSpace, Intelius, TalentWise, and Bluedot. Today, Jain is an executive and co-founder of Viome, a gut microbiome testing service. He's also involved in Moon Express, a company aiming at lunar mining for elements like cobalt,  niobium, and others.
